Discover the charm of the old town: from the iconic Venetian Harbor and the Byzantine Museums to the majestic Egyptian Lighthouse.

The Venetian Harbor & Lighthouse (Chania Old Town)

The Venetian Harbor is the heart and soul of Chania. Built centuries ago by the Venetians for their fleet, it has evolved into a stunning waterfront lined with colorful mansions, the historic Neoria (ancient shipyards), and vibrant cafes and restaurants.

Guarding the harbor entrance is the Egyptian Lighthouse, one of the oldest in the world. Reconstructed by the Egyptians about 200 years ago on its original Venetian foundations, it remains the city’s most iconic landmark. As you stroll along the quay, history comes alive through a blend of Venetian, Ottoman, and Neoclassical architecture. At night, as the lights reflect on the sea and illuminate the ancient walls, the atmosphere turns magical—the perfect starting point to explore the hidden alleys of the Old Town.

The Archaeological Museum of Chania

Housed in the beautifully restored Venetian monastery of Saint Francis, in the heart of the Old Town, this museum offers a captivating journey through Chania’s long history. The collection spans from the Neolithic era to the Roman period, featuring remarkable finds from the Minoan settlements of Ancient Kydonia. Highlights include exquisite Minoan pottery, intricate Roman mosaics, and a unique numismatic collection.

The building itself is a historical monument, having served as a church, a mosque, and even a cinema over the centuries. Its courtyard is a peaceful oasis in the city center. A visit here provides the perfect context for understanding the rich archaeological sites scattered across Chania, from Ancient Aptera to the Minoan palaces.

Chania Municipal Market (Agora)

Built in 1913 to celebrate the union of Crete with Greece, the Municipal Market (Agora) is a monumental cross-shaped building that serves as a living museum of Cretan commerce and culture. Beneath its grand glass roof, you’ll find a bustling atmosphere where locals shop for the island’s finest treasures: mounds of wild herbs, wheels of graviera cheese, barrels of olives, and the world-renowned Cretan olive oil and tsikoudia.

More than just a landmark, the Agora is a sensory journey. The aroma of spices and fresh pastries, the sounds of traditional bargaining, and the vibrant colors of local produce offer a true taste of Chania. It is the ultimate destination to sample authentic Cretan products—from thyme honey to artisanal cheeses—and to experience the authentic pulse of the city.

Ancient Aptera

Perched on a hill overlooking the majestic Souda Bay, the ancient city-state of Aptera was one of Crete’s most powerful forces for over a millennium. Its strategic location offers breathtaking panoramic views, while the vast archaeological site reveals a fascinating timeline from the Hellenistic to the Byzantine era. Must-see structures include the remarkably preserved Roman cisterns, a small ancient theater, and the remnants of monumental temples.

The site’s historical layers also feature the 19th-century Ottoman fortress (Koules) and the 12th-century Monastery of St. John the Evangelist. Walking through Aptera, with its sweeping vistas and tangible sense of the past, provides a quiet yet deeply moving alternative to the bustling coastal destinations, perfect for those seeking a soulful connection to history.

Maritime Museum of Crete

Located at the entrance of the Venetian Harbor within the Firkas Fortress, the Maritime Museum of Crete chronicles the island’s deep and turbulent relationship with the sea. Its collections span from the Bronze Age—featuring intricate Minoan ship models—through the Byzantine, Venetian, and Ottoman eras, leading up to the heroic naval battles of the 20th century.

A deeply moving highlight is the detailed model of the destroyer “Velos,” famous for its crew’s 1973 mutiny in protest against the military junta. The museum’s setting is of immense historical significance, as Firkas Fortress is where the Greek flag was officially raised in 1913 to mark Crete’s union with Greece. For a perfect finale to your visit, head to the roof for a spectacular panoramic view of the harbor and the lighthouse.
